Usui Reiki Healing Explained

Reiki Healing Session

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that promotes relaxation, balance, and overall wellbeing. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words "Rei," meaning universal, and "Ki," meaning life force energy. Together, Reiki translates to Universal Life Force Energy.

Reiki works on the principle that life force energy flows through every living being. When this energy becomes depleted, blocked, or unbalanced due to stress, illness, emotional challenges, or everyday life, it may contribute to feelings of physical, emotional, or spiritual discomfort. Reiki aims to support the body's natural ability to restore balance by encouraging the healthy flow of energy.

Reiki was founded in Japan in the early 1920s by Dr. Mikao Usui, who developed the Usui System of Natural Healing after a profound spiritual experience on Mount Kurama. Dr. Usui believed that everyone has the ability to connect with universal healing energy and that this energy could support the body's natural healing processes.

His teachings were passed down through dedicated students and eventually introduced to the Western world, where Reiki has become one of the most widely recognised complementary therapies practiced today.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner gently channels universal life force energy through their hands to the client. This energy is believed to flow where it is most needed, helping to restore energetic balance throughout the body.

Unlike massage, Reiki does not involve manipulation of muscles or tissues. Hands are placed lightly on or just above specific areas of the body while the client remains fully clothed in a peaceful and relaxing environment.

Each person's experience is unique. Some people report sensations such as warmth, tingling, coolness, gentle pulsing, or a feeling of deep calm, while others simply experience profound relaxation.

Reiki is a holistic therapy that supports the wellbeing of the mind, body, and spirit. While individual experiences vary, many people seek Reiki to help:

  • Reduce stress and promote deep relaxation

  • Support emotional balance and wellbeing

  • Encourage mental clarity and inner peace

  • Ease feelings of anxiety and overwhelm

  • Support the body's natural healing processes

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Restore energetic balance

  • Promote an overall sense of harmony and wellbeing

Reiki is considered a complementary therapy and is designed to work alongside conventional medical care rather than replace it.

Your Reiki session begins with a brief consultation to discuss your intentions, wellbeing, and any areas you would like to focus on.

You will then lie comfortably on a treatment table, fully clothed, while soft music and a calming atmosphere help you relax. Gentle hand placements are used either directly on or just above the body as Reiki energy is channelled throughout the session.

Many clients enter a deeply relaxed, meditative state, while others remain awake and simply enjoy the peaceful experience.

At the end of your session, we will discuss your experience, any insights that arose, and offer guidance to support your ongoing wellbeing if appropriate.
